Ik volg nu de cursus Europese Film en krijg dus heel wat klassiekers te verwerken, met name uit de Weimar periode van Duitsland. ‘M‘ van Fritz Lang bijvoorbeeld. Deze en vele andere toppertjes staan beschreven in ‘The Ray Memorial 100′: een selectie van de beste Europese films ooit gemaakt. Het is zeker geen definitieve lijst, maar genoeg om even flink in het diepe te springen.
Print ‘em uit, plak ‘em op je DVD speler en zorg ervoor dat je, eer je sterft, deze prijkende pareltjes gezien hebt.

When I listen to music I see colors and shapes and when I watch visual art I hear sounds. I wanted to express my sensing of shapes, colors and music in this short movie.
I have chosen a short Jazz piece, which I have known for many years of my playing the saxophone: “Giant Steps” by John Coltrane. Coltrane made a major break through with his album “Giant Steps” in the year 1959. It was the first time in the history of Jazz music that someone based his music on symmetrical patterns, which stemmed from a mathematical division of the musical scale.
The structural approach of John Coltrane to music is associated with architectural thinking. The musical theme defines a space and the musical improvisation is like someone drifting in that imaginary space.
Bill Evans was en is een van de beste pianisten ooit. Een meester en een groot gevoelsmens, iets wat hem uiteindelijk de das om heeft gedaan. Deze documentaire uit 1966 is uniek en een belangrijke tekst. Hij legt zijn muzikale filosofie in woorden op tafel; te beperkt om de muziek recht aan te doen (gelukkig laat hij ook het een en ander horen) maar even goed fucking fascinerend, essentieel en on point bovendien.
