Electric Miles rules my life right now. ‘Agharta’ and it’s companion ‘Pangaea’ are the best live recordings ever put on tape. The artwork for both LPs is fucking amazing as well. Instant favorite. Wish I had the originals.

Now this is all well and good, but the sad thing is, basically, after these releases (1975) music really turned to shit. Good music went underground, out of sight. Mainstream music got nowhere, turned in on itself and came out again like really nasty diarrhea.

And now we’re stuck with massive fucking cunts like Justin Bieber spraying their diabolic shit all over the world and actually getting away with it, because we don’t have any good reference points anymore. Someone like Miles Davis doesn’t stand a chance in todays world and we’re never, NEVER going to hear genius like this again.

Click on it. Marvel at it. Turn it up really loud and shit your pants while you try to comprehend it. Bitches.

Based on this ol’ book, the following website will blow your mind. Watch as the dots and notes collide with each other creating magnificent images and sounds. Sometimes it sounds like the building blocks of harmonics are laid bare in these animations.

… I’ve been playing, once again, with the ideas of experimental film pioneer John Whitney, using both graphics and audio. While Whitney was interested in turning musical ideas into motion graphics, I’m doing the inverse — turning one of his key animation ideas back into music. Whitney made a number of films based around the simple idea of harmonic relationships.

Narrated by Academy Award® Winner Forest Whitaker, BEFORE THE MUSIC DIES is an unsettling and inspiring look at today’s popular music industry featuring interviews and performances by Erykah Badu, Eric Clapton, Dave Matthews, Branford Marsalis, ?uestlove and a wide variety of others. The documentary film has built a passionate following as “the most important film a music fan will ever see” (XM Radio) by providing “a balanced overview of the state of the rock scene of America” (The Wall Street Journal) and adding “passion to the eternal debate about the industry” (The New York Times).

Last year, BEFORE THE MUSIC DIES filmmakers Andrew Shapter and Joel Rasmussen walked away from traditional Hollywood distribution to instead pursue a large-scale grassroots release with B-Side Entertainment. Since its release in November 2006, the film has screened over 200 times in over 130 North American markets with hundreds of additional events anticipated worldwide during 2007.

Inspired by new sounds, new technologies and the political events of the time, the early 90s sees the emergence of a scene that euphorically celebrates the dawning of a new era.
In Berlin, Frankfurt and many other German cities, activists tinker on a new music and club culture oriented around the coordinates Techno and House.

Recently an interview with the man behind it all surfaced… which could also be interesting to people who are thinking about starting their own label.

This months interview comes courtesy of Subtle Audio head Code. He spilled the beans on the difficulties in getting the label up & running, the effect of the current economic climate on d&b, and even news of a possible Equinox EP project for Subtle Audio. If that wasn’t enough, he even put together a little mix to showcase the Subtle Audio sound.

Slightly over a year ago I posted a badass mix of modal jazz (here). That was actually part two. I couldn’t find part one until just now, so here it is. It doesn’t get any better than this, folks.

Here’s wat Dodz, the dude who created this mix, said about it:

The reason there’s no track title for the braxton thing, is that most of his composition titles are schematics of some sort, usually represented graphically, so i have no way of writing it. I guess i could scan it if anyone is that curious.

There’s so much great jazz out there that could be classified as either ‘modal’ or ‘free’ (tension, non-resolution) that one could easily fill hundreds of mixes.

I started this one with 2 absolute classic jazz nuggets that were composed by miles davis. the first track, ’so what’, being the one that started it all. Milestones is another basic modal track that is centred around just 2 key centres for long periods of the form. The improviser is given a whole different set of possibilities when approaching a tune from this perspective as opposed to songs that are based on a constantly changing harmonic framework, where you’d be more inclined to ‘outline’ the changes as they pass at a quiker rate.

MP3 (160kbps)

Tracklist
01. Miles Davis – So What (Kind Of Blue)
02. Bill Evans – Milestones (Vanguard)
03: John Coltrane – Resolution (A Love Supreme)
04: Anthony Braxton (Montreaux/Berlin Concerts)
05: Michael Brecker – 2 Blocks From The Edge (2 Blocks From The Edge)

Swedish techno producer Anders Ilar decided to release his latest offering for free on teh interwebz. Here’s what he had to say about it:

Released on 23rd of December 2008 to celebrate the new solar year. The 8 new tracks on Twilight Rainfalls are based upon a meditative piano session recorded on October 19th 2008 in Ludvika. The recordings was later cut into parts and used as sourcematerial for the tracks. The initial idea was to make a very quiet ambient album with only some 808 rhythms to compliment the piano, however after the first track was finished (in light we trust) I realized that this would not be the case. The rest of the tracks was put together in the following weeks. The 9th track (althea) was produced some years ago using the sound of the very same piano.

As times are becoming rougher for many labels and distroes I realized it would be a long time waiting for a CD or vinyl deal for this material. And with things being as they are I believe the best way to spread these vibrations is in free digital format.
So realizing this work might dissapoint a few of my listeners, atleast now you know the story behind the music and its intention is simply to be what it is (music), while hopefully inspire the listener to raise the frequency of love on this planet.

Love and Light!
Anders Ilar

So go on and grab yourself some free sweets!

FirstSounds.ORG offers (what probably is) the first recording ever of a human voice (in this case singing a line from a french folk song). This is recorded seventeen years before Edison did his thing for the first time.

We released this sound in March 2008, and it has become the icon of humanity’s first recording of its own voice. In September we undertook a second restoration using more advanced technologies.

The website’s goal is to create a comprehensive database of old recorded sound and other related and historically significant material.
