Toch fijn dat ik net even de televisie aanzette. Jan van Friesland was aan ‘t woord, een documentairemaker die net een filmpje inelkaar heeft geflatst over de vraag of Jezus Christus een mythologisering van Julius Caesar was. Deze theorie is in 1988 voor ‘t eerst gepubliceerd en vervolgens uitgewerkt door Francesco Carotta. Volgens de website van deze kerel is de documentaire 2 november in het Louis Hartlooper Complex te zien (ook staan er op genoemde website een aantal artikelen die eerder in de media zijn gepubliceerd, bijvoorbeeld deze uit het NRC).
Natuurlijk is lang niet iedereen het met Carotta eens (atheïstische pseudo-wetenschap?), maar interessant is het zeker en bovendien is het wel vaker voorgekomen dat een idee eerst als belachelijk wordt beschouwd om vervolgens mainstream te worden.

“Well I guess in my mind I’ve always wanted music to do something to me and maybe I’ve always wanted it do almost the same thing. But to make music do the same thing you have to keep making different music. Now, when I first started making music, I was interested in the personalities I could play; the different figures I could be. I lost interest in that. I didn’t want myself to be in the center of the music anymore and so I begun experimenting with trying to remove the personality in some ways. For example by making more than one voice so that it stops being a single figure in the middle of the picture. And I’ve tried singing using nonsensical words. Using words backwards. Putting strange sounds on my voice. Different ways of reducing the importance of the figure in the picture. Because what I started to get interested in was not the figure, but the landscape behind the figure.

The Right Brain vs Left Brain test … do you see the dancer turning clockwise or anti-clockwise? If clockwise, then you use more of the right side of the brain and vice versa.
Most of us would see the dancer turning anti-clockwise though you can try to focus and change the direction; see if you can do it.
Here you go… Found it on a cassette and cleaned up the hiss a bit. Bear in mind it’s a ten year old tape though, so the sound isn’t wonderful. No tracklist i’m afraid. I still have every record, but not the million years it would take to track down and identify each one. Feel free to fill in the blanks if you want. Anyway - nice 90 min mix of deep house and odd breaks from a long time ago. Hope you like :)

Ik volg nu de cursus Europese Film en krijg dus heel wat klassiekers te verwerken, met name uit de Weimar periode van Duitsland. ‘M‘ van Fritz Lang bijvoorbeeld. Deze en vele andere toppertjes staan beschreven in ‘The Ray Memorial 100′: een selectie van de beste Europese films ooit gemaakt. Het is zeker geen definitieve lijst, maar genoeg om even flink in het diepe te springen.
Print ‘em uit, plak ‘em op je DVD speler en zorg ervoor dat je, eer je sterft, deze prijkende pareltjes gezien hebt.

‘Machine Soul: A History of Techno’ is een artikel (geschreven door Jon Savage) wat oorspronkelijk gepubliceerd is in The Village Voice gedurende de zomer van 1993. Best wel old school dus en daarom vooral niet minder interessant. Hier lees je meer over R&S, ambient, Kraftwerk, Orbital, Biosphere en andere legendarische knoppendraaiers*.
